📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR)

  • The 10:1 Rule: Distance / 10 = Optimal Size.
  • Always add a 20% safety buffer for older smartphone sensors.
  • Vectors (SVG/PDF) are non-negotiable for professional print.
  • Higher data density requires exponentially larger physical size.
  • DPI targeting: 300 for close print, 150 for large format signage.

The Mathematics of Light

A QR code is essentially a grid of focus points. As distance increases, the angular resolution required by a camera sensor increases exponentially.

If a QR module (the individual black squares) becomes smaller than **one pixel on the sensor**, the phone can no longer distinguish between the pattern and background noise.

Low-Light Failure

In dim environments (restaurants/clubs), camera ISO increases, adding digital noise. This effectively blurs the edges of smaller QR codes.

Required Action: Increase size by 30% for dark environments.

The Gold Standard Sizing

Formula:
Size (S) = D / (10 × M)

Where:

D= Scanning Distance
M= Data Multiplier (1.0 for short URLs, 1.5 for vCards)
S= Resulting physical square size

vCard Print Scenario

Distance (D): 24 inches (Reading a poster)
Complexity (M): 1.5 (High-density vCard)
Base Size = 24 / 10 = 2.4 inches
Complexity Adjusted = 2.4 × 1.5 = 3.6 inches
Final Recommendation: 3.6 x 3.6 Inches

Vector vs Raster: The Print War

Bitmapped images (PNG, JPG) are comprised of pixels. If you scale them up, they become "fuzzy" – an instant scannability killer.

PNG

Raster: Fixed resolution. Loses edge contrast.

SVG

Vector: Infinite scale. Razor-sharp results.

Export Protocol 2026

For all specialized print and billboard applications, always choose SVG.

Size Calibration FAQ

What is the absolute minimum size for a business card?

While technical minimums are smaller, we recommend 0.8 x 0.8 inches (2cm). Many older smartphones lack 'macro' focus capabilities and cannot scan smaller codes from close range.

Does the white border (Quiet Zone) count toward size?

No. The white border is mandatory for the sensor to find the pattern edges. Your measurement should be the square pattern itself plus a minimum of 4 pixels (modules) of white space on all sides.

How do logos affect sizing requirements?

Logos destroy a portion of the QR signal. If you add a logo, you MUST increase the error correction to Level H and increase the physical print size by at least 15% to compensate for the lost data blocks.
